moto X

One of the more exciting motorsport have to be the motocross. Somehow, this genre seem to not really catch the limelight in Malaysia. Its big and popular in the western countries and as far as I know, in Asia, the sport has favorable followings in many countries including our won. But as I said, it doesn't seem to catch the limelight....

During the weekend of 27th Dec, I stopped over in Ayer Hitam on my way to JB. To my absolute awe, there's a very good motocross track right smack in Ayer Hitam town... And I guess I was in luck as though it was noon time, a bunch of xrossers were actually riding at the tracks. It was such an exhilirating sight! to see 'em doing air time...

But what is more exhilirating... or rather interesting is the fact obout the riders. I went to have a chat with a man whom looked to me like the 'boss' of the Xrossers. Well, I was right (didn't catch his name though...). Apparently the group that day consisted of racers or competitors in the regular motoX events across Malaysia. And they were riding Kawasaki sponsored machines! That's not very interesting right? What's blew my mind (though slightly...) was that the riders consisted of kids ranging from 10 to 16 yrs of age.... !!!

Ignorance or Just Plain Stupidity?

I didn't really know what to do. In my mind at the time, either we collide or I spill or both of us fell. Either way, I will definitely eat dirt and sustain road rash at the very least. Or it could be much worse.. I could break few bones or sustain much more serious injuries.

Kesas Hiway bike lane... I just exited into the bike lane on my way to work this morning. Sometimes, motorcyclists would make an about turn and ride the opposite direction for reasons only known to them. Being a one way road, most of the times we are caught by surprised by such act. However, since I've used bike lanes for a number of years, this improper act is somewhat common. Sometimes motorcyclist missed a junction, thus he/she would make a u-turn and would slowly make his/her way opposing the normal ride direction. I guess its okay as long as he/she keep to the edge of the road and do not make any sudden move.

This motorcyclist today however was something else. He made a u-turn - fine. I saw him coming and he was keeping to the edge of the road. He was on my left hand side, so I steer my bike to the my right... Fine. No! Not fine!

As he came closer, I think he was less than fifteen feet away from me when he suddenly steered his bike towards the right (my right) side of the road - directly on my path. I was taken by surprise... didn't quite know what his action would be next. Will he keep on this path? Or would he steer back to the left hand side? As he came close... too close.. in too short a time, I was psyched about colliding with him. I mean, his bike was right there smack in front of mine. I hit the brake, my bike's rear tyre locked and skidded a bit... at that very instant I sense that he would stay on his path thus I made a quick left manouvre.... We missed each other in just a nick of time!

My heart was pounding like those Jamaican drums. My hands anf legs felt numb. It could have been a terrible mess! And he just wave his hand as I looked back.... What a numbskull!

Taking shortcuts have been known to be one of the main causes of accidents. Add stupidity to that, and its a disaster waiting to happen...

have bike will travel far......

April has been a sad month for the biking fraternity in this neck of wood... From my count there were four fatal bike incidents, either thru crashes or due to spills. And an equal number of incidents happened with riders luckily escaped death. That's a total of eight mishaps in a month! Wayyyyyy too many.... These incidents sort of made the four bike-theft incidents (that I happen to know of) in the fourth month of this year seemed like a no issue. Yupp... there's no match when its between loss of life and loss of belongings.....

3rd April ~ Hayabusa rider from Ipoh crashes with a car

4th April ~ A Singaporean with 20 yrs experience collided with a car jsut before Pagoh exit

5th April ~ Blackzee spilled along the hiway in Melaka

26th Apr ~ A BMW rider perished after a collision along the highway in Bukit Gantang, Perak.

Mere statistics? Not when it involves somebody close to you or somebody you know!

Its disturbing to see so many mishaps.... Where I work, the catch phrase that I learned to embrace is "incident free operations" and "zero incident is possible". Sounds simple. Not! Not without effort and hard work. Learnings from past incidents and losses pointed in the direction of human behaviour as the main contributing factor almost always. People say habits are difficult to change and shape. Almost impossible. Maybe so. But adidas say impossible is nothing..... :)

Having gone through life for close to half a century, I learned that when we put our mind and heart into it, things can be different. Whatever that "things" is, it can always change for the better... So, can we change our riding behaviour?

We all know that we are always exposed to all sorts of danger on the road - reckless drivers (and riders as well), inconsiderate road users, potholes and other similar road barriers etc... My take.... we are actually the number one, top of list, numero uno, most wanted, bla bla... danger to ourselves! Why ourselves?

Behaviour - our behaviour - can only be controlled by us. No other person can control our behaviour. He or she might be able to influence the way we (decide) to behave, but the final action is entirely ours. How we behave on the bike is entirely up to us. The decision to "cilok" or to "push the limit" or whatever watchamacallit behaviour we do on our bike is solely ours. So does the consequences of that decision and action. So, if we decide to go faster than the speed we are able to handle, then that behaviour is (un)controlled by us - not the faster guy on that bike up front! The decision to behave safe is also entirely ours!

Well, if we still think that we are not a danger to our own self, then that is definitely the biggest threat of all! Having a superbike does not mean that we have to be super.... having a superbike does not mean we have to be better than those having less than 'super' bikes.... having the ability to do certain things does not mean we are obliged (or expected) to do it.... Remember what is at stake... not just mere belongings, but our life & death!

When we are a threat to ourselves, more often than not we are also endagering others.... I always reminded myself, riding a superbike does not make me a super rider. Rather, it makes me a super threat to myself...

Ride defensively guys! Our family's counting on us.......

Have Money, Will Buy?

When we were younger, the lure for power were strong. At the time, a two-stroker 350cc seemed like the ultimate ride ~ a killer machine more likely. But as we get older, a wee bit wiser maybe, but with many bruised ego beneath the scars, we only begin to appreciate that power is nothing without the ability to control its potential.

I am always perplexed when I know of someone whom has very little experience with 'big bikes' but is eager to buy his/her dream machine - more often than not for the wrong reasons. There are many articles I'm sure written by experts on owning and riding big bikes. And like me, I'm certain that most would look at the various tips and techniques of riding paying particular interest on taming the curves and corners. Well, at least that was what I did when I first started out my craze with big (more sports than big...) bikes ~ at the time it was a 125cc Suzuki RG-F !!!

And when you're in your early twenties, that was way too much power to handle (at least for me at the time - and I started riding since I was in primary school!)...

These days, when I hear that a noob (whom has little years behind them with bikes) saying that he's buying a litre bike, there's always an uneasy feeling within me. The thought of somebody with so much enthusiasm (read as foolishness...) squeezing the throttle of a very powerful bike really scares me. When you're young, you're 'hot blooded'. Given power, control, sadly more often than not means controlling the roads and highways.... when it should be controlling oneself from abusing that power in the machine.

I've heard many times otais saying "the most difficult skill to attain in riding is the ability to control yourself and to be able to throttle-down when your lust and desire are telling you to throttle-up" . Sounds easy. Not! When your ego is at stake or when you have something to prove (not to yourself but to the others!) or when you need to keep up with the Jones'... its very difficult. Well, if you bear in mind always that the stake is costlier than your ego, prolly you would think and act differently. The stake is most definitely much more... its your limb or your life! How many times have we heard that a rider perished because "he's new"? Way too many.... way too many.....

You have facility to buy that dream machine? Prolly yes? But do you have what it takes to control yourself? You and only you can answer.... My take on these questions, depends. If you're "enthusiastic" and "hot-blooded', take it one step at a time. Promote yourself up at most by half of what you are used to.... no more than that. Give yourself some times to stay in that "class"... when and only when your are comfortable with another promotion then and only then should you consider upgrading.

A friend once advised me "since you're on a kapcai, upgrade to a 250 first, give yourself a year before going for the 600 then another year before a litre class. But if you feel you'll strong enuff to control & behave, skip the steps and go for yr dream machine"

Looking back, I agree with him totally. Hey! look at those motoGP riders.... they start from the lowest class and would stay for a couple seasons before getting promoted to the next level...

Have money will buy? Hmmm... buy for the right reasons!
